Why did lighthouses need fog signals?
Historic light stations used fog signals to provide an audible identifying pattern when poor visibility obscured the light. Sound supplemented the visual aid; it did not make navigation safe on its own. Bells, whistles and other equipment performed that role at different stations and dates. A museum's preserved signal explains past practice, not today's operating status. This guide is historical interpretation, not instructions for navigating in fog.
The National Park Service's Point Reyes history explains the relationship directly: fog could prevent mariners seeing the lighthouse, while a sound pattern supplied another identifying signal. It also makes clear that lights and fog signals did not eliminate shipwrecks.

Was every fog signal a foghorn?
No. “Fog signal” names the function, not a single machine. The NPS history of U.S. lighthouses describes mechanically rung bells followed by steam whistles, reed-trumpets and siren-trumpets.
That vocabulary matters when reading a museum label. A bell is not a whistle, and identifying an object as a horn does not establish its power source. Record the term used for the particular apparatus before trying to explain how it worked.
For an exhibit note, separate these questions:
- What produced the sound?
- What supplied its power?
- What controlled the sequence?
- Which station and period does the label describe?
These are our interpretation prompts, not an operating checklist. Do not test a bell, turn a handle, operate a valve or activate preserved machinery to answer them. Equipment operation and conservation belong to authorized specialists.
A familiar word can be useful without being precise enough for every purpose. “Foghorn” may introduce the subject, but the object label should control the technical description.
Could a fog-signal station exist before its lighthouse?
Yes. The U.S. Coast Guard's Cuckolds history records a fog-signal station established in 1892 near Boothbay Harbor, Maine. A light tower was added in 1907.
That is a fifteen-year separation between the two dates: 1907 minus 1892. It does not mean the later tower was present for the station's entire history.
The example changes how to read a site plan. Instead of treating every outbuilding as an accessory to an original tower, ask which function came first. At Cuckolds, the sound station preceded the light tower. Another site's sequence must be established from its own records.
Keep the following labels distinct in your notes: station established, building constructed, equipment installed and light first shown. A date can be accurate and still answer the wrong question.

Why do fog-signal buildings matter?
They help reveal the work behind the signal. The NPS account of South Manitou Island dates its steam-powered fog whistle to 1874 and a new building to 1875. It describes a boiler using coal or wood, with steam supplied to a roof-mounted whistle.
The same account records a change before the 1934 shipping season to an air-diaphone system using diesel generators and air compressors. These are different equipment phases, not interchangeable descriptions of one unchanged installation.
The historical point is larger than the visible horn. A signal required supporting machinery, accommodation for it and maintenance. Read the building and the apparatus together, while keeping their dates separate.
On a permitted visitor route, use labels or official plans to identify spaces. Do not label every chimney a fog-signal chimney or infer a pipe's purpose from its direction. If interpretation does not identify a component, leave it unidentified.
Preserved industrial equipment is not a visitor demonstration by default. Follow barriers and staff instructions; do not approach an operating sound source or enter closed machinery areas.
What was a signal's characteristic?
In this context, a characteristic is its documented identifying pattern. The Point Reyes history describes fog signals as sounding patterns that communicated location. The national NPS history also explains that official records listed navigational aids and their characteristics, with changes published for mariners.
For historical reading, distinguish the kind of sound from its sequence. “Steam whistle” describes equipment. A documented account of sounding and silent intervals describes a pattern. Neither phrase alone supplies every other fact about the station.
Do not reconstruct a period from a short recording or transfer a pattern from a neighboring lighthouse. A museum clip may be edited, and an account may describe a different equipment phase. Establish what the source actually records before drawing a conclusion.
This article deliberately supplies no usable signal-identification table. Historical characteristics are not current navigation instructions. Mariners need current official information and qualified maritime instruction appropriate to their vessel and waters.
Can a simple exhibit exercise expose a mistaken claim?
Consider this fictional label-reading exercise, not an account of a real collection:

Each caption goes beyond its supplied evidence in a different way. Correct the first by retaining the documented object name. Correct the second by leaving equipment dates unresolved. Correct the third by describing the display without claiming current operation.
This exercise does not establish that a particular museum label is wrong. Its purpose is to make the reasoning visible before a visitor writes a caption or shares a photograph.
A useful personal note can therefore have three short parts: what the source states, what question that answers, and what remains unknown. The unknown part is not a failure to understand the exhibit; it identifies the next useful question.
Does a silent exhibit tell you whether a station is active?
No. Silence during a visit establishes very little about the status of equipment elsewhere or at another time. Likewise, a recording playing in a gallery does not establish that the preserved object is operating.
Ask the operator whether you are seeing original equipment, a replacement, a reconstruction or an interpretive display. If sound demonstrations matter to your visit, confirm their availability, visitor restrictions and accessibility directly. Do not assume a demonstration is scheduled or that hearing it requires approaching the apparatus.
Keep current access questions separate from historical research. An old document can establish an installation date without establishing whether a building is open today. This article makes no promises about admission, transport, tours or operating demonstrations.
What is the main historical lesson?
A light station was a collection of functions, not merely a tower with a lamp. Fog signals make that especially clear: identifying a place could require different equipment, buildings and work when the visual signal was obscured.
